Kadafi seized power in a bloodless military coup in 1969 and served as head of the state of the country until 1977, when he resigned his official executive role as Chairman of the Revolutionary Command Council of Libya, and later claimed that only a symbolic figure . Critics often describe it as de facto Libyan autocrat, an affirmation of their official Libyan state denied.In 2011, the state established the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya was overthrown in a civil war that consisted of a survey with the help of a NATO intervention. Its 42 years of leadership before the uprising did the fourth longest serving non-real leader since 1900, and the oldest Arab leader. That is variously styled "Brother Leader" and "Guide of the Revolution" in 2008 a meeting of traditional African rulers granted the title "King of Kings."    

After seizing power in 1969, Khadafi abolished the Libyan Constitution of 1951. He established laws based on political ideology that he had made, called the Theory of the Third International and published in the Green Paper. After establishing the Jamahiriya ("state of the masses") system in 1977, officially retired from power and has since maintained a largely symbolic role within the governance structure of the official country. Rising oil prices and extraction in Libya led to increased revenues. By exporting more oil per capita as Saudi Arabia and wellness programs through various, Libya reached the highest living standards in Africa, although not as high as several oil-rich countries like Gulf, Libya remained debt free under his regime. Khadafi started several wars and acquired chemical weapons. The United Nations called Libya's Khadafi in a pariah state. In the 1980s, countries of the world imposed sanctions against Gaddafi. Six days after the capture of Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein in 2003 by U.S. troops, Khadafi Tripoli renounced weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and welcomed international inspections to verify that it was going to go ahead with the compromise. A leading defender of the United States of Africa, he served as President of the African Union (AU) of 2 February 2009-31 January 2010.

In February 2011, after the revolutions in neighboring Egypt and Tunisia, protests against the Khadafi regime began. These led to a revolt that spread throughout the country, with the opposing forces establish a government based Khadafi in Benghazi name of the National Transitional Council (CNT). This led to the 2011 Civil war in Libya, which included a military intervention by a coalition led by NATO to enforce a Security Council Resolution 1973 UN calling a no-fly zone and the protection of civilians in Libya . The assets of Khadafi and his family were frozen, and both Interpol and the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants on 27 June Khadafi, his son Saif al-Islam, and his brother-in-law, Abdullah al-Senussi, in relation to crimes against humanity. Gaddafi and his forces lost the Battle of Tripoli, in August, and September 16, 2011, the NTC Libya took a seat at the UN, replacing Gaddafi. He retained control over parts of Libya, in particular the city of Sirte, which was presumed that he had fled. Although Qaddafi's forces initially resisted the advances of the NTC, Khadafi was captured alive after his convoy was attacked by NATO planes fell in Sirte October 20, 2011. Khadafi was beaten and killed by the rebels.
