John Lennon, MBE (October 9, 1940-December 8, 1980) was an English musician and singer who rose to worldwide fame as one of the founding members of The Beatles, one of the most commercially successful acts and the critically acclaimed in the history of popular music. Along with fellow Beatle Paul McCartney, formed one of the most successful partnerships of the 20th century songs.
Born and raised in Liverpool, John Lennon became involved as a teenager in the skiffle craze, his first band, The Quarrymen became The Beatles in 1960. As the group disbanded at the end of the decade, Lennon began a solo career that produced the critically acclaimed album John Lennon / Plastic Ono Band and Imagine and iconic songs such as "Give Peace a Chance" and "Imagine" . After his marriage to Yoko Ono in 1969, changed its name to John Ono Lennon. Lennon fought the music industry in 1975 to devote time to his young son Sean, but reappeared in 1980 with a new album, Double Fantasy. He was killed three weeks after its release.
John Lennon revealed a rebellious nature and biting wit in his music, his writings, his drawings in the movie, and interviews, becoming through his controversial politics and peace activism. He moved to New York in 1971, where his criticism of the Vietnam War led to a long attempt by the administration of Richard Nixon to deport him, while his songs were adopted as anthems by the anti-war movement.
From 2010, sales of Lennon solo album in the United States exceed 14 million units, and as a writer, co-writer or an artist, he is responsible for 25 number one singles in the U.S. Hot 100 chart. In 2002, a BBC poll on the top 100 British voted eighth, and in 2008, Rolling Stone ranked him fifth greatest singers of all time. He was inducted posthumously into the Hall of Fame in 1987 and Composers in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.
